The BDLC Philosophy
The purpose of the Bloomington Developmental Learning Center is to provide an educational, child-centered, family-oriented, multi-ethnic child care program to our member families.  BDLC provides individualized attention through a self-paced environmental exploration with appropriate guided instruction.

The Center's goal is to allow each individual to develop his or her unique physical, cognitive and social-affective potentials.  We encourage self-reliance, independence, and respect for others.  A variety of materials, activities, and equipment is made available to the children, creating an environment for growth and learning.

The Center's program is flexible and is adapted to the personality and developmental needs of each child.  The staff is concerned with helping children grow and develop in all of the following areas:

Cognition:  children's thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills

Communication and Literacy:  children's ability to communicate through words, both spoken    and written

Physical:  Gross Motor (large muscles, coordination) and Fine Motor (small muscles, dexterity)

Social/Emotional:  children's respect and empathy for others and family, adult and peer  interaction

Self-help:  children's capacity to take care of personal needs and acquiring indepedence in age-appropriate eating and hygiene tasks

              plus,

Creativity: allowing for children's spontaneity, exploration, originality

A major role of the teacher of young children is to identify an individual child's interests, abilities and needs for growth or improvement.  The teacher then facilitates and encourages development in these areas.  The staff is concerned, interested and involved in the total life experience of each child; therefore, a close relationship with the child's family is essential.  Children learn best in a warm, supportive, informal atmosphere where success is measured in terms of a child's interest, growth and enthusiasm.
